About Us

The UK Oil & Gas Chaplaincy is an ecumenical chaplaincy, which acts on behalf of all the mainstream Christian Churches in bringing pastoral care and the comfort of God's word to people in their workplaces and homes.

The Chaplaincy was founded in the late 1980s when its development was led by the first Chaplain, the Reverend Andrew Wylie. He was succeeded in September 1991 by the Reverend Angus Smith.

The current Chaplain, the Reverend Andrew Jolly, succeeded Angus in February 2006. Since then, Andrew and Anne have continued to consolidate the Chaplaincy as an integral part of the British oil and gas industry. There is not a corner of the far-flung oil and gas field where their names and work are not known.

This is because they are here for you and will never turn you away.

Is The Chaplaincy For Christians Only?

No, it is not. The Chaplaincy and its work are for everyone associated either directly or indirectly with the UK oil and gas industry. It is for people of all Christian denominations or of none. It is for people of all beliefs or of no belief.

It's true that the Chaplain is a Minister of the Church of Scotland. But, as a Christian, he respects all beliefs that are sincerely held and aims to represent the universal church in all its forms.

Depending on what you want, he can provide help directly and personally or he can refer you immediately to a representative of another denomination, faith or creed.

The Chaplaincy is here for all and will never turn you away.

How We Are Funded And Managed

Our service operates through the support of the Aberdeen Oil Industry Chaplaincy Trust which is fully funded by Oil and Gas UK. The Aberdeen Oil Industry Chaplaincy Trust is legally constituted and exists to administer the annual costs of supporting the Chaplaincy service.

The Trustees, who are drawn from the Industry, meet three times a year to make appropriate financial provision for the Chaplaincy, to monitor financial transactions as required by law and to hear a report of the Chaplain’s work. The Trust’s finances are examined and audited annually.
